What I did

Within Kessel Run, a division of the United States Air Force’s Digital Directorate, I took on the roles of Researcher, Data Analyst, Documentation Specialist, Product Designer, Visual Designer, User Experience Designer, and User Interaction Designer. Kessel Run is responsible for several Programs of Record and is an Agile Delivery Organization. Our goal was to sustain the existing Air Operations Center baseline while building a scalable software factory to create intuitively designed Command and Control systems that operate effectively in highly contested environments.

While I am unable to disclose specific project details, I was involved in the following:

  • Conducting in-depth research on complex military operations, identifying barriers and defining future requirements.

  • Adhering to CNS standards and designing applications for successful MVP launches.

  • Creating low to high fidelity wireframes to accelerate development velocity.

  • Participating in team rituals to define end user requirements.

  • Developing user personas, problem statements, and user flows.

  • Utilizing an efficient and iterative design process.

  • Presenting user insights to the team to prioritize development efforts.

  • Conducting interviews and usability testing to enhance the user experience.

  • Traveling to remote locations for field studies and gaining insights into military operations.

  • Creating design outputs for high-level stakeholders.

Additional Information

The U.S. Space Force was established on Dec. 20, 2019, when the National Defense Authorization Act was signed into law, creating the first new branch of the armed services since 1947. The establishment of the USSF resulted from widespread recognition that space is a national security imperative. When combined with the growing threat posed by strategic competitors in space, it became clear that there was a need for a military service focused solely on pursuing superiority in the space domain.
